I'm not sure we have a 'left wing/right wing' thing going on in the UK, compared to North America (and the study is from Canada). We've got a fiscally conservative vs a fiscally liberal (or perhaps irresponsible) party - so on financials the right/left separation is there. The study mainly talks about social attitudes though - and here we have more of a consensus from all parties around socialised medicine, benefits etc. Indeed, we have a Labor party during who's watch the UK became the most CCTV packed country on earth, we had proposed internment without trial for terrorist suspects, refusal to remove innocent people's records from the DNA database, swinging 'RIPA' police powers, section 44 stop and search, massive increase in the number of religious schools, 'extreme pornography' (whatever that is) legislation... the list goes on. And now we have a Tory/Lib Dem government repealing a lot of that, and rushing through full gay marriage (much to the annoyance of the Church). So here in the UK, who exactly are the right wing authoritarians that the report criticises?
