| HowardJ Photographer Location United Kingdom Surrey | You buy what they call a cold shoe and attach it to a light stand like a Manfrotto nano by screwing it on. You then insert the foot of the flash gun into the cold shoe on the stand. You can also buy a umbrella clamp for the light stand. if you do then you can attach the cold shoe to that instead. the umbrella clamp has a angled hole into which you can insert an umbrella. you can then point the flash gun into the umbrella to have the light spread out and softened. You next challenge is how to fire the flash gun on the stand from your camera. you could use a cable with a PC connector assuming your flash has such a connector or you flash might have a light sensor on it which could be fired by an Infra red trigger attached to the top of your camera. See Strobist.com and their lighting 101 section for a full tutorial in off camera flash. There are also numerous books on the subject available. see Morris photo's Manfrotto section or eBay for cheap umbrella clamps, cold shoes, light stands and umbrellas. These give a wireless connection between the camera hot shoe and the flash (via the shoe or PC socket on the flash gun). |

| StNeots Photographer Location United Kingdom Bedfordshire Potton | Your flash may have an optical slave built in -Yongnuo 560 does for one. Consult the gun's instuction book for slave modes. Optical triggers can be bought which will fire guns without this built in . Examples are http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-kaiser-k1501-slave-unit-trigger/p1006117 or alternatively, search ebay with "optical flash slave trigger" and you will find them in UK for under £6. The optical ones have the advantage of working with the older flash guns with unsafe trigger voltages, which may sometimes be found in some charity shops for very little cash. If you use the transceivers then almost all flashes will work (provided they don't have high trigger voltages which will fry the TTL circuitry - these are quite old pre-digital camera flashes). |

| StNeots Photographer Location United Kingdom Bedfordshire Potton | From the Olympus America site:-
The EVOLT E-500 does not have an RC mode and so cannot communicate with electronic flashes in the Olympus wireless RC flash system when those flashes are in RC mode. However, when connected to these electronic flashes via hot shoe or the optional FL-CB05 Hot Shoe Flash Cable, the EVOLT E-500 can communicate with them in traditional TTL modes. |
