| JenSomerfield Model Location United Kingdom Bristol Plymouth (holiday) / Bristol (term) | That's a whole other can of worms, and I can't think of any legitimate reason for a photographer to hide it from a partner. Work colleagues perhaps, or at least keep it discreet, but hiding it from your wife is rather suspect. I can think of at least half a dozen photographers hiding it from their wives |

| xsab46 Photographer Location United Kingdom London | "The majority of people see a naked girl and they think porn" Wrong. Too long doing what you do. Too long in the Purestorm bubble. Agreed. All my friends know that I shoot nudes. My female friends are more enthusiastic than my male ones about looking at them. I often spend time looking at my latest nudes with my female friends, they ask to look at them, and I often get comments like 'yours are the only nudes I feel comfortable looking at'. Last Saturday I spent over 1/2 hours looking at my photos with the wife of one of my best friends, getting her critique. My previous job was exactly the same, everyone knew that I did nudes and it never caused any problems. In short, people do differentiate, and are able to tell the difference between art and porn. |

My previous job was exactly the same, everyone knew that I did nudes and it never caused any problems. In short, people do differentiate, and are able to tell the difference between art and porn. You must live in a more liberal world that I do. I have had the good experiance of working and hanging around with a bunch of Art Sudents and a bunch of non art students. The Art Students were pretty much like the people on here. They thought that nude was fine etc and that there is a difference between levels. (I personally do not agree. I think there is nude and non nude.) However what is more important is the quality of the image not the style. There is a huge amount of crap nude and a small amount of god nude. However the non arty friends most of whom are university educated all made jokes about me making porn etc. I don't shoot nudes as a matter of course. Mainly as I am not convinced that I can shoot well enough to justify shooting nudes that yould just look like badly shot pictures of naked people. So I found what they said a little bizarre. However I did notice that people who went on about it were the ones buying the Sun and not getting upset about looking at a young woman's breasts at breakfast or at a picture fron a camera aimed up the skirt of another young woman as she got out of a car. | ph_oto Photographer Location United Kingdom South Yorkshire Barnsley | It's kind of annoying to hear you describe models as 'stupid' if they don't read or believe this advice. 80% of the time they're quite young. I'm sure you did a few things without thinking about the future when you were 21. And you probably didn't study a manual beforehand. They're young & ill-informed. That doesn't make them stupid. As an amateur, asking your topless model for an additional fee on top of reimbursing the shoot fee is taking the I was using the word "stupid" as a Quotation from the OP's original text. And yes I made a few stupid mistakes myself but I made them because I didn't have the benefit of someone giving me advice or telling me that they weren't the thing to do. When people did give me sound advice, if I didn't heed it then Yes I was stupid too. At the time of the shoot with the topless model I wasn't an amateur (so that assumption was also wrong), neither was the model in question and she accepted the shoot and signed a release on the understanding that the images were to be used and sold. Her asking me not to do so several months after the shoot would have left me with no means of earning back the money she had been paid and I sure as heck considered that she should also compensate me for the time I had wasted shooting her and in fact that it was her who was "taking the p**s" Had her attitude not degenerated into foul mouthed verbal abuse I would more than likely have considered her request favourably. |

Work colleagues perhaps, or at least keep it discreet, but hiding it from your wife is rather suspect. I kept my interest quiet initially as I didn't have a clue what I was doing, hence the made up name. Once I realise that I did know what I was doing and I started getting positive feedback I started being more open about it. But even not using my name publicly didn't prevent one local nosey parker digging around and start stiring up trouble. I think the link came from the bank that my PS subscription is paid from, then via my personal site to WhoIs which of couse has my name as registrant. You think you've covered your tracks but there's always someone prepared to dig. Now pretty much all my family and friend know and I haven't had any disapproval. Also anyone visiting my studio gets to see my work. There will always be someone who disparages what you do whether it involves nudity or not. I just don't let these sort of people be a part of my life. |

If it could be proved I would have chased the bank for everything I could have gotten them for. That would be a serious breach of confidentiality. But if you were to remove the rose-tinted eyewear.... Has it occurred to you that you are being humoured? Yes, of course your friends want to see your pictures, people of both sexes like looking at images of naked girls. "Yours are the only nudes I am comfortable looking at"....oh, come on,..are you really swallowing that? Your pictures may well be inoffensive, but if you really believe that at least some of your friends are not giggling behind your back then you are very lucky to be living in a middle class Utopia. I could go to most dinner parties and throw a selection of my less explicit work on the table. Everybody would be very nice, would admire enthusiastically, oooh and ahhh about how pretty it was and how nice the girls look and how it didn't look like porn at all...and was so classy... But when I left..it would be "oh, these were really nice"..."yes, lovely...still porn, though?"..."oh, yes, of course, porn is porn"...Such a nice man though, you wouldn't think he would be making porn at all, would you?".."True, but lets just make sure we keep our daughter away from him" giggle, giggle... |

Correct.
If one is involved with model photography - on either side of the camera - one becomes blase about nudity. But the majority of people out there have never had any involvement whatsoever with model photography, so they usually view pics of naked women as porn or, at the very least, highly non-PC. And if those pics have been taken as a hobby and not for business purposes, chances are that the photographer will be quickly categorised as a one-handed keyboard jockey who is to be treated with caution.
We're blase about it. Most people are not.
