Ola,

I want to go to Sussex University to do my MA (Gender and Sexuality) and I have been led to believe that it is the best university for the field I want to continue in.

I assume I'll be living in Brighton, so I'm getting my feelers out and trying to find out as much information as possible. I've been before and it's hard not to love the place. The embracement of alternative culture and sexuality, arts and music, open water and less than an hour to London. I'm sold. Also, even though he doesn't know this yet, my boyfriend might be moving with me.

Can people help me out with more practical information? I know it's expensive but where are the best places to live where I won't get shot/robbed/kidnapped? Is it so touristy that I'll grow to hate the place? What's the weather like?

Keep away from the Whitehawk estate. It's to the right, just above the far end of Kemp Town.

Yes, flats are expensive here. A 2 bed, 2 years ago, would have been £725-£750 pcm. Now it's £850-£900.

Kemp Town is were the gay area is, but not exculsively there. Hove as well. Once you get along St. George's Road in Kemp Town, towards teh end, Eaton Place area, it has a nice 'village' feel to it.

Portslade to the east is a bit run down.

Brighton is great for youngsters, plenty of live music type places. But as for me, 'an old fart', I wouldn't venture out after 7pm.

There's a huge drugs scene there. Police raiding flats, and a lot of posing as buyers on the street to catch the dealers.
You know what's there. Waiting. Beyond that beach. Immortality! Take it! It's yours!

Huge drug scene, you say?

How is it living in Hove, rather than Brighton? Or is it the same place. I don't know.

It's just really a city now. Brighton is the central bit, with Hove to the east. Hove is nicer, but go out left to far and you hit Portslade. Definately no.

Plenty of great places to eat out, I have to say. Lots of bands. 11,000 uni students.
You know what's there. Waiting. Beyond that beach. Immortality! Take it! It's yours!

It can get quite touristy, but only really at weekends and it's easy to avoid the throng. It's never bothered me and I have quite misanthropic tendencies. Despite being (for many people) a holiday town, there is always a lot going on through the week - music, exhibitions, parties etc. If you want to indulge, you can - and if you want to find a quiet space then that's quite easy too. Loads of good places to eat, bookshops, coffee shops, markets and the excellent Duke of York independent cinema.
Hove has generally been the slightly better heeled neighbouring 'village' but it's become increasingly difficult to find the boundary between the two places. It's a bit more expensive and middle-class, but still an interesting place to live and never dull. As Ted says, avoid the Whitehawk (and Moulescomb) areas when flat-hunting. I'm sure you'd work that out yourself though if you went for a look around. Seven Dials, Hove and Kemp Town are all good places to look at.

Yes, Diabolik is correct, touristy at the weekends, especially. On a Friday afternoon, you see hen party and stag party groups, coming out of the main station. Groups of friends, on weekends away and so heading for the coast. Yes to Sevens Dials area and just above it, by Basvick College. Doesn't have like those 'postcode gangs' like up in London. Actually great train service up to London, Victoria for the West End shops. Or into London Bridge for the City area. Brighton buses are fantastic. Loads of them, very frequent.
You know what's there. Waiting. Beyond that beach. Immortality! Take it! It's yours!

Look around Hove station and Denmark Villas, used to stay in a flat there it was not to expensive and the locals are reasonabley civilised.

There is a lot of misleading stuff on this thread. I have lived and worked in Brighton and Hove all my life if there are any specific questions you (the OP) has feel free to send me a message.

Also one of my favourite "real world" models is a graduate of Sussex University in Anthropology and gender studies and is based in Hove.
