| Carley_xox Model Location United Kingdom Gwent Newport | I'm pretty new to this so I'm just wondering... How does a model (without an agency) get to becoming paid and published? Obviously for a start - building a portfolio and reputation is the start but what then? Who and how do you contact? |

| andybramahphotograph Photographer | its dead easy to get published if you send pictures to mags like zoo, nuts etc. they will quite happily publish pictures of you and pay you nothing. the other way is to shoot syndication shoots with photographers who have a track record of being published and getting paid. regards-andy bramah. |

Exactly. There is quite a difference to getting 'published' and getting paid. In the 21st century 'publishing' includes anything posted online technically. I think you are probably meaning 'published in a well established printed magazine'. If this is the case its a tough one anyway because the print format is dying fast and there are already far too many models and photographers competing for an ever-shringking slice of cake. In general most publishing and entertainment businesses, even huge household names, are finding it ever more difficult to make money from images/video/music/created works in general - there has been a seismic shift over the past few years towards 'sharing' content for free, and hence the monetary worth of content has plummeted. If you are looking for money I would suggest you are probably better following the lead of a few smart models I know and targetting yourself at middle aged hobbyists. They have a good disposable income and will still spend it on good models. But alas, you may have to accept less than glamourous assignments, and it won't carry the kudos of seeing yourself in a glossy mag. Money = one direction. Published = another direction. Of course, there are always exceptions to prove every rule. |
