| BigEarsPix Photographer Location United Kingdom Warwickshire Rugby | In the good old days you could have any focal length you wanted as long as it was around 50mm. We all couldn't wait to throw them away when wide angle, telephoto, and God forbid, zoom lenses became available. Now all of a sudden everyone wants a 50mm. Funny old world. | |

I was always told by my first photographic 'mentor' that years ago a camera manufacturer was often judged by the quality of its standard lenses (ie 50mm). Sadly, for quite a few years they seem to have fallen by the wayside but now everybody wants everything bokehlicious I get the impression they're making a comeback and manufacturers are taking notice of them again (as proven by the Sigma mentioned in this thread) - Leica's offerings are also quite exciting (albeit at a heart-attack inducing price tag) |

| philhackettphotography Photographer Location United Kingdom Northamptonshire Northampton | I've had and enjoyerd the Sigma - it's good at or near wide open but I found it disappointing stopped down a little where other lenses thrive. My current favourite is the Zeiss 50mm f/2.0 Makro Planar - has none of the issues associated with most of the other 50mm's. The Canon Macro is also very very sharp. |

The Canon Macro is also very very sharp. The thing is, most people aren't buying a 50mm prime to stop it down, I'd imagine most will want to use it pretty much wide open and as such the bokeh is probably of slightly more concern than absolute sharpness (I use mine at ~1.6-2.2 for the shallow DOF and I chose the Sigma over the Canon simply because it had nicer bokeh). For me as well, I love those Zeiss lenses but unfortunately my eyesight isn't so good which pretty much rules them out - shame as I love the feel of old fashioned manual focus lenses, I find their build quality reassuringly nice to use. For sharpness my plastic fantastic Canon 50mm f1.8 II is pretty damn good at f8 - probably on par with my Canon 100mm Macro (or at least they're both pixel-sharp on my cameras) |

| alexcrawford Photographer Location United Kingdom Essex Chelmsford | (snip) Leica's offerings are also quite exciting (albeit at a heart-attack inducing price tag) i was telling a friend yesterday of a leica purchase i saw being made in hong kong airport. the card and receipt was handed back to the purchaser, and he put that away safely only to drop the brand new leica m9 seconds later. ugh by the looks of the body language, the camera still worked fine, they were all smiling and nodding. i was almost crying as the chap did not have the strap attached to the camera, assuming if you pay £10k for a camera and lens you get a "free" leica branded strap ? LOL all's well that ends well... |

| alexcrawford Photographer Location United Kingdom Essex Chelmsford | For sharpness my plastic fantastic Canon 50mm f1.8 II is pretty damn good at f8 its optically one of the best i've ever used and *certainly* for the price of under £90. only trouble is the moment you rest it on its front element, the front element pops out and the result is: BROKEN. i've purchased and used 3 of them as they were so good, but now i just cannot justify affording another one, so i went back to the previous model, paid a lot more for it, and now have a metal lens that doesnt fall apart at the slightest pressure on its front. if you can guarantee not to use it and place the camera down to it rests forward on the lens, ie tripod mount it and keep it that way, then i'd recommend this lens to everyone all day long, of if you can be careful of course ! (not a chance of that for me). |
