Advice needed with regards to declaring income to HMRC

Hi,

I have recently decided that I want to start trying to find paid work. I called the HMRC helpline to fun out about declaring any income, just to be told that I can't declare until I am actually earning. Does this sound correct? Do I need to wait until I am actually being paid to declare, rather than just having the intention to be paid? Last thing I want I to be in trouble!

Surely advice direct from HMRC "should" be more reliable than information gleaned from here - however well intentioned.

You fill out a tax return at the end of the year, there are always lots of radio adverts nearer the time.  Tax doesn't have to be taxing!

Well, you would think so, however having spent bazillions of hours on the phone to their helpline with regards to tax credits, I have come to the conclusion that the call centre staff know nothing at all about anything and exist solely to confuse and befuddle callers.

You may well get a lot of cogent advice on here. I am self employed, been so for a few years. I have 4 separate businesses and do the photography as a hobby, although I do charge occassionally, depending on the job. My bottom line to you is this - GET AN ACCOUNTANT.

If you are in full-time work and pay tax via PAYE - depending on how much 'extra' you are earning from modelling and how often - it may be simplest just to call them and let them know your extra earnings as and when - that way they will just alter your PAYE tax code... but yeah, talk to them about it..

The one thing you do have to do is tell HMRC you are self employed. There is a set time in which this has to be done. I think it's something like three months from the time you start being self employed and not when you earn your first paid work.

You have to tell HMRC you are self employed by law.

But once you have been on the courses you will find on average that you will pay no tax during the first 3 years.

You may even get some back from previous years that you have paid.
