Since I can't find any windows 7 drivers for my Scanmaker 8700 It looks like a need a new flatbed.
Now just looking for a half decent A4 flatbed for scanning tear sheets & the odd old print for retouching, thinking Epson or Canon.
From what I can see you can get something pretty good for around the £100 ish - though if there is a good reason will spend more.

Any recommendaions would be helpful, thanks

No need to spend any more - either the Epson or Canon at just under £100 will do you fine.

Try Vuescan software - http://www.hamrick.com/ - drivers for most scanners built in, free trial download.
It's not Fine Art just because it's in Black and White.

I've got the Epson V300 Photo, which is pretty good. It scans slides (4 at a time) as well as prints and the results are quite useable.

You could get a multipurpose scanner / printer / copier for that price range if all you want to do is scan prints...or as suggested, try Vuescan.

I dont know if you have tried the following, it appears to suggest you no longer need to purchase a new scanner just to download a driver.

http://support.microtek.com/knowledgebase_1/kbdtl.phtml?request=KB-00106SW

Microtek will not be releasing certified driver for the ScanMaker 8700.
Microtek has tested the last windows XP 32 bit driver for the scanners below and it has worked.
Many customers who have used this driver, have successfully installed the scanner.
The driver can be downloaded at the end of this document.

Note: In order to install the scanner in Windows Vista or Windows 7, you need to disconnect the scanner from the back of the computer's USB cable.
Next install the driver and reboot your computer.
Once your computer has rebooted connect the scanner to the back of the computer's USB connector.
Also you need to check if the scanner is being detected without a yellow exclamation in the device manager.
If a yellow exclamation is in device manager, remove the scanner from the device manger and reboot the computer.
