Another little trick is to spray paint the top label size gently several times. this creates a thickish reflection layer, only really necessary if you can hold the disc up to the monitor or sky and see through it. Poor quality discs tend to be seethru and this can lose laser light instead of bouncing it back at the reader.

Alternatively, just affix a plain CD label and save youself a shedload of hassle.

Ya you could do that, but if it's off centre even a fraction at the spin speeds we're talking about it can stress the drive motor, even cause a bit of a wobble, but everythings just a chance at this point. Any way to enhance the reflectivity of the disc top surface is going to improve the drives chances of reading it. Try one, try both, if it works it works - then destroy the disc and burn a new one on better media.
