Filing negatives

I have a huge file of negatives, around 20,000 and still growing. All entered into a ledger using pen and ink. The ledger which is decades old is beginning to fall apart. Can anyone suggest software which with which I could not only list and describe the negatives, but also seek subjects like an old fashioned cross filing system. I have no knowledge of spreadsheets but from what I have read they are designed to produce calculations from entered data so assume they are mainly used for entering numeric data, so am unsure if they would work for me and my negative file. Any advice would be gratefully received.

You can use a spreadsheet for non numerical data but it sounds like you need database software - can't recommend anything as I don't use such software though.

Many thanks for the advice. A little search on Google brought up i-data by a company called Apimac which seems perfect. Thanks again
