Friend of mine has this and I was having a play using her settings, which include autoWB. Seemed a bit hit and miss. Then tried custom WB, admiteddly just using piece of white paper, and that wasn't 100 percent. Sometimes sublime colours, other times not so good.
Must have been something I was doing, just wondering what that might be.  Never used canon myself, but custom wb seemed simple enough.

Try a CWB with a grey card rather than white paper - this tends to work best for me on the 5DII. Or an Xtrite Colorchecker if it's mission critical colours.

Thanks, I'll do that. I have a grey card, but didn;t have it with me at the time. I'll look up this Colourchecker - thanks.

My Sony A700 Custom WB works best with grey.

I was told years back that the grey inside cloth/colour on my Lowepro bag was suitable as a grey card.

Dows it matter what your white balance is set at if you shoot in Raw ?

It'll affect the rendering of the embedded jpg that appears on the back of your camera. Also, whilst it doesn't affect the raw data captured in the image file the white balance setting is read by most image editing packages so will determine how your raw image is initially rendered in those applications.

Useful to know Gerry, I use one of those bags.

Truedefinition: Iif I'm honest I don't know. Obviously you can set wb in post, but whether getting it spot on in camera makes any difference to the final result i don't know.

I was only asking based on what I could see on the lcd, which I believe is a jpeg interpolation (if that's the right term).

I did google that Colouchecker thing and they obviously wouldn't sell if it was enough to just click on a neutral area in ps to correct wb.

Have to have a think about it.

In this day and age when there's mixed lighting, I'd rather set it as near as at the time.

+1

Makes working through batches of images somewhat easier due to consistency.
I prefer not to think before I speak. I like being just as surprised as everyone else by what comes out of my mouth.
